OPETH: New Album Title, Track Listing Revealed - Feb. 5, 2008
Swedish progressive metal titans OPETH have set "Watershed" as the title of their forthcoming album, due out on June 3 via Roadrunner Records (one day earlier internationally). The CD, recorded in the band's native Sweden and produced by frontman/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and Jens Bogren, is a masterwork that follows the time-honored OPETH tradition; its modern yet timeless, progressive yet paying homage to the sounds of classic rock.
According to a press release, "Watershed" is truly one of those special records that cycles through a variety of moods, speeds and textures, complete with lots of subtleties and nuances of sound. Because of its expansive scope, "Watershed" is destined to land the album atop many "best-of" lists. Album opener "Coil" is a gorgeous acoustic number, featuring local folk vocalist Nathalie Lorichs, while "Heir Apparent" will knock listeners unconscious with its blunt force metal. Always one to defy the rules, OPETH posits sung vocals over artillery-like blast beats on "The Lotus Eater", cementing their reputation as innovators and redefiners.
"Watershed" combines elements of modern metal, prog rock, free jazz and hints of European folk music, all of which come together for a seamless, unique collection of songs that will leave an indelible mark upon all who listen.
The follow-up to 2005's "Ghost Reveries" is the first OPETH release to feature new guitarist Fredrik Åkesson and drummer Martin Axenrot and is the band's second effort for Roadrunner Records.
"Watershed" track listing:
01. Coil
02. Heir Apparent
03. The Lotus Eater
04. Burden
05. Porcelain Heart
06. Hessian Peel
07. Hex Omega
In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Åkerfeldt stated about "Watershed", "The music is much more complex. The metal parts are even faster and a lot more technical than the last one. It's really hard to play some of this stuff. I mean, I wrote it and even I have trouble playing parts of it. I think it's going to be hard for some people to get into. It's definitely not a commercial-sounding record. The arrangements are exhausting. And it's much darker. Even the major patterns are very dark, while I think 'Ghost Reveries' had some light."
When asked if the songs were influences by anything musical, Mikael replied, I was hugely inspired by Scott Walker, who's an avant-garde artist and crooner. Last year he put out a record called 'The Drift', which is quite extreme and frightening, and it made a huge impact on me. Immediately, I wanted to do something like that. It just felt right. Also, with the situation the band has gone through over the last couple of years with the lineup changes, I just wanted it to be this way. I didn't want it to be a happy-sounding record."
Musically wise; this sounds promising.
But I don't like the art that much and imo the patch is a pretty lame :?.
Kick ass cover art. Eagerly awaiting the leak of 'Prevail'
Kick ass cover art. Eagerly awaiting the leak of 'Prevail'
Yeah indeed! I totally agree! I love the cover art as much as the art from In The Arms Of Devastation! That two headed beast thing is awesome!
Deicide - always loved these guys, was totally let down with last album though, was garbage imho. Very Poorly recorded and/or mixed, was not typical Deicide recording. This sounds like it could be promising though at least the one song they have posted on thier myspace. But hard to imagine Deicide without the Hoffmans though, so Only time will tell...
Not that Jack Owen/Ralph Santola aren't legends as well, but the twins made Deicide what they were in their heyday, just doesnt have that great 90's Deicide sound/feel to it.
Kataklysm - Ooooo I can't wait, "Prevail" will be another fantastic album from these guys I'm sure!! They never disappoint..
OMG! I feel like a noob that I didn't know this until now, but I didn't see anything about it on this forum yet so I decided to post this anyway... LOST HORIZON IS GOING TO MAKE ANOTHER ALBUM!!!
OFFICIAL BAND STATEMENT, 1st of January 2008
Almost five years have passed since the release of “A Flame To The Ground Beneath” and after the turbulence the band experienced. The remaining members now realize this period was necessary to regain the energy, strength, motivation and inspiration needed to continue with the unearthly creations.
Only, this time things will be done a lot different than before.
While continuing the search for the voice, which will be embraced by our music, the recording of the new material will be carried through independently of that and immediately, with start on January, 2008. All instruments will be successively fully recorded and maybe even mixed without vocals on. All skeptical or frightened by this procedure should know/be-reminded it was more or less the same case with “Awakening The World” album when Daniel’s vocals was post-mixed after the instrumental mix in Studio Fredman.
Martin, Wojtek and Christian, the founders of the band, together with Attila, who all shared the same vision and goals, are once again the core of Lost Horizon and so it will remain in the future to avoid the destructible situations of too many wills and visions coming in conflict with each other.
One Band, One Vision…

With this in mind we also have decided not to approach any offers of a record deal with record labels only to be cosmically ripped off, limited or controlled. We will take care of all studio and graphical matters by ourselves.
Moreover, the material is not going to be recorded all at the same time, but song by song. If the singer problem is solved relatively shortly, then the songs will be available to buy directly after each one is totally processed and ready for the world. All songs will be distributed through the website.
According to our philosophy we want to establish a direct channel between us and our fans where our music and artwork will be distributed directly from our website, supervised by Valgorth, The Apocalyptic Blaster Of Rats In Cosmic Fury, to avoid any annoying, irrelevant interference by any greedy companies making it impossible to make a living as an artist/musician unless you sell a million copies.
This will be also Your chance to join us on the path to bring back the music to the listeners and musicians, promote the music You love and make musicianship once again the beautiful art form it once was!

I'm really looking forward to this, despite the absence of Daniel Heiman, my all-time favorite power metal vocalist.
I'm also very interested!
Also concerning the upcoming DVD's of Gorgoroth (Krakow show) and Bloodbath (Wacken show)! I hope to see that stuff up here when they leak.
