Vocalist Maurizio Iacono of the Canadian death metallers KATAKLYSM has issued the following update:
"KATAKLYSM just recently finished mixing their new album ('Prevail') at AudioHammer Studios in Orlando, Florida with producer Jason Suecof. The album is going through a mastering process as we speak and should be wrapped up by the end of the week. In other words, fully complete and ready to kill! The anticipated album will also feature guest solo appearances by Pat O'Brien (CANNIBAL CORPSE), Dave Linsk (OVERKILL) and producer and guitar shredder Jason Suecof himself! The band promises a monstrous album that will pummel you from start to finish. The album artwork and track list will be unleashed next Monday on the bands MySpace page and website. Stay tuned!"
"Prevail" is scheduled for release via Nuclear Blast Records on May 23 (Europe) and May 27 (North America).
KATAKLYSM recently decided to "immortalize" the character that was featured on the cover of their most recent album, "In the Arms of Devastation", and have him re-appear as the main character — dubbed "The Heartbeast" — on "Prevail"
on 2nd april it will give the first promo track to hear...
also J-F (which recorded it) said it will be the most catchy since "Shadows and Dust" and"ITAOD", AND the most brutal since "Temple of Knowledge" and "serenity in fire", all in all the album also is a longer one with 10 tracks including a instrumental at the end...
oh my god i hope they let max show all he can, more those gravity-blast like the ones on "like angels weeping (the dark)" so the whole newbie's do no longer run around and say how good martin was, so tey no longer can say "ITAOD" is such a (mostly) slow album because max it back, and a better (and louder) drum sound than the one from "ITAOD"...
we will see...

OPETH: 'Watershed' Artwork Revealed - Mar. 30, 2008
The cover artwork for "Watershed", the forthcoming album from Swedish metallers OPETH, can be viewed at this location. The cover was (as usual) designed by Travis Smith in co-operation with frontman/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt
"Watershed" is scheduled for release on June 3 via Roadrunner Records (one day earlier internationally). The CD, recorded in the band's native Sweden and produced by frontman/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and Jens Bogren, is a masterwork that follows the time-honored OPETH tradition; its modern yet timeless, progressive yet paying homage to the sounds of classic rock.
"Watershed" track listing:
01. Coil
02. Heir Apparent
03. The Lotus Eater
04. Burden
05. Porcelain Heart
06. Hessian Peel
07. Hex Omega
All the songs were written by Åkerfeldt apart from "Porcelain Heart", which was co-written with new guitarist Fredrik Åkesson. One additonal track, "Derelict Herds", was also recorded and this was written by Mikael Åkerfeldt and Per Wiberg. On top of this, three cover songs were recorded. "Bridge of Sighs" from ROBIN TROWER's 1974 LP of the same title, "Den Ständiga Resan" (sung in Swedish) by MARIE FREDRIKSSON as well as the classic ALICE IN CHAINS song "Would?"
The album was recorded at Fascination Street studios during November 1 and December 13. Some additional recording was done between January 3 and January 7.
Says Mikael Åkerfeldt: "I've worked so hard with these songs for quite some time now, I've listened to 'em a zillion times. I don't hate them just yet! The album sounds great sonically and I think I can hear us evolving as the record plays on. It is taking us somewhere musically and I don't know where. It's very exciting to say the least! I can't remember having enjoyed a recording this much ever before."

DERANGED Calls It Quits - Mar. 30, 2008
Vocalist Martin Schönherr of Swedish death metallers DERANGED has issued the following update:
"Sad news… A couple of weeks ago Rikard Wermén decided to leave the band. He’s been handling all of the band's correspondence (as well as any other matters concerning the band) the last 15 years and told us that he basically was fed up and didn't want to do that any longer and therefore decided to leave the band. He's been doing a really great work and has always managed to squeeze in time to handle the band's business. He also said numerous times that he will stay and do whatever shows that was booked but wouldn't handle any correspondence and the likes, and even said if we managed to get a tour later this year, he would stay for that as well in case we hadn't managed to get a new drummer. Fair enough, and we thank him eternally for that… Now, Johan Axelsson said that he didn't want to do the booked shows and wanted to split the band up ('coz of reasons unknown) which leaves me and Tomas Ahlgren no other choice then hereby say that we can't play the . Therefore DERANGED are from now on split up."

ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET: New Album Title, Songtitles Revealed - Apr. 1, 2008
ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET, the new Swedish band featuring former THE CROWN vocalist Johan Lindstrand, has set "Grim Tales" as the title of its third album, due before the end of the year via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD will be recorded beginning on June 1 at the Black Lounge Studios in Avesta, Sweden with producer Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY). Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Misfit With A Machine Gun", "Dominator Of The Flesh", "Cursed By The Knife", "Make Them Die Slowly", "The Frisco Reaper" and "Saint Lucifer".
Commented Lindstrand: "Today we entered the rehearsal room to start jamming on some new songs together. We began with four songs out of ten and it felt great. I mean, we've had the songs 95% finished for a while now but this was the first time we played and messed around with them as a band. We will continue to work really hard with all ten tracks to get that extra punch in the face and bring a new level to them compared to what they sounded like on demo. I know that you will love this album. No experiments — just great, raw and powerful death thrash."
Hell Yeah!! This is great news!!

STORMLORD: New Album Details Revealed - Apr. 8, 2008
Italian "extreme epic metal" band STORMLORD will release its long-awaited fourth full-length album, "Mare Nostrum", on May 23 via Locomotive Records. The CD was recorded at Giuseppe Orlando's Outer Sound Studios (NECRODEATH, NOVEMBRE, KLIMT 1918) and was mastered at Finnvox Studios by Mika Jussila (HIM, CHILDREN OF BODOM, NIGHTWISH, SENTENCED). The artwork was designed by Gyula Havancsak (ANNIHILATOR, DESTRUCTION, BENEDICTUM, ELVENKING, GRAVE DIGGER).
"Mare Nostrum" track listing:
01. Mare Nostrum
02. Neon Karma
03. Legacy Of The Snake
04. Emet
05. The Castaway
06. Scorn
07. And The Wind Shall Scream My Name
08. Dimension: Hate
09. Stormlord
According to the band, "the journalists that had the chance to listen to during the studio reports describe 'Mare Nostrum' as a mix of our first two albums, 'Supreme Art Of War' and 'At The Gates Of Utopia', played and arranged with a superior maturity and technical skill.
"We just can say that we love our new songs, they sound epic like in the old times without forgetting the style of 'The Gorgon Cult'. There are a lot of new solutions that we never used before like sitar, folk parts, gloomy clean vocals, 'Mediterrean' ethnic instruments and an amazing drum work. Our singer Cristiano has sealed his best performance so far, going from high pitch screaming to earthquaking growls, while the keyboard work, now up to our guitar/keyboard player Gianpaolo, is the most epic thing we’ve ever done in ten years.
"Expect a bombastic yet furious avalanche of extreme epic metal, we know that some people has been waiting for this since a long time, we will not disappoint them."

STORMLORD!! cant fucking wait ;D

TOM GABRIEL FISCHER Quits CELTIC FROST - Apr. 9, 2008
Swiss avant-garde/metal pioneers CELTIC FROST have released the following statement via their official web site:
"CELTIC FROST singer and guitarist Tom Gabriel Fischer has left CELTIC FROST due to the irresolvable, severe erosion of the personal basis so urgently required to collaborate within a band so unique, volatile, and ambitious."
It was reported earlier in the year that CELTIC FROST was putting together an album tentatively titled "Monotheist Companion" that will feature unreleased songs from 2006's "Monotheist" sessions and rearrangements of tracks from the album. The disc is tentatively due in the summer.

here's some news:
dead to fall broke up. :(
Damn, I totally missed that one... a very interesting and unique band, for sure. At least they got out one more album before tanking.
Anyone else see that Stratovarius broke up??? I know they're not "extreme" metal, but I loved them... so glad I was able to catch them before they split. Here's what my friend sent me about it:
After a long period of silence, on March 4, 2008, Timo Tolkki officially stated the break-up of Stratovarius on his site. Internal tensions within the band were cited as the cause, saying that Lauri Porra and Jens Johannson were his only supporters, Jorg Michael was more focused on his session work, and Kotipelto was best for having a band by himself. The band was planning to release a new studio album, codenamed R.... R....., in 2008. Instead, however, Tolkki will be releasing the album himself in June 2008, and will be forming a new band around the album, called "Revolution Renaissance"
