i guarantee ZERO people will mention america. can't blame 'em. Excuse me? I forgot that bands like Disgorge, Deeds Of Flesh, Vile, Cannibal Corpse, Immolation, Suffocation, Origin, Nile, Severed Savior, Vehemence (I could go on and on) weren't from America. And I already mentioned a section of the US.

I dont want to start a fight here, but if you look at the ratio of good bands to total bands, I think Japan would emerge the winner :P In that aspect US sucks big big time, but honestly, the good one's from USA have created enough mayhem to not like them and they're good, when I'm talking about a metal scene as such, I'm referring to why I like a particular scene and not why i hate some scene. In all honesty, US scene, as some of the members have mentioned is scattered and excellent, when it comes to totality, I dont think it stands a chance when compared to few European countries.

I think it's just that the American metal scene is so much more spread out than other countries. There really isn't a Bay Area Thrash or Floridian Death Metal scene any more. There are as many great American bands as any other country mentioned, they are just buried under so much mediocrity.

ProfessorChaos- 08-24-2008

I'll admit there are plenty of mediocre bands that come out of the US (just as there are plenty that come from many other countries as well...including Norway, Finland, Sweden, Canada, Germany and any other "metal hotbed" y'all want to name) but for anyone to downplay the importance of the American scene over the years in the grand scheme of metal is just fuckin' idiotic.

^ Now thats a perfect post, reflecting everything America's got !

Indeed! The US has a great metal scene, but it's not one scene. It's a combination of a lot of scene's, also like Grim mentioned; the Bay Area Thrash or Floridian Death Metal scene's are definately the most important/well-known. And there's much more to find there! For me personally, I don't have one favourite metal scene. Especially not country-wise. I've my periods, I've had a period of a couple of years of listing mostly Black Metal (in those years I'd say the Norwegian scene was my favourite), currently I have more of a Death Metal period. And at this point I listen mostly Progressive and Technically Death Metal, so it's heard to choose a country's metal scene. I listen to Opeth, Cynic and Between The Buried And Me a lot the last couple of weeks. Since these band are from totally different countries, I couldn't a favourite name one. But for the next couple of weeks it could easily change to the more Old School kind of Death Metal, like Entombed and Bolt Thrower or so, so then I could name the Swedish or British scene as my favourite. And perhaps I'm much more into Thrash Metal by the end of this year and then it'll be a whole different story, who knows! To be short: I like too much subgenres in Metal to name a favourite country's metal scene! That's the only reason I didn't post in this thread yet. But that also explains my love for Metal, there's so many subgenres and styles that are there to explore. And sometimes I feel I can go way more in depth with a style I thought I was so familiar with. And it keeps evolutioning as we speak! And it will be in years and decenia to come, that why I know I won't be bored with this genre for all of my life! And I guess I won't be able to answer the question that is this thread's title for all of of my life.

The only reason the US has so many mediocre bands is because we have so many people to begin with. Anyone can easily obtain an instrument and form a band. I'm sure the ratio of good bands to bad is the same here as it is in most other countries. Plus who's to say which band is good and which isn't anyways, it's all subjective.

I know, I wasn't directing that comment towards you or anyone in particular. Just reiterating what others are saying. :P

Belgium rulezz!

eiger- 09-01-2008

No,not really. Hard to deceide what my favorite death metal country is. All i can say is that Czech Rep has some amazing grind.

DirtyRotten- 09-02-2008

I gotta raise the horns to Sweden, way too many favorites of mine from there. Here in the states we're fortunate to have many pioneers of different styles, California alone is home to the majority of my old school favorites.
